Self-Reliance

August 9

"Sin makes men accomplices of one another and causes concupiscence, violence, and injustice to reign among them.  Sins give rise to social situations and institutions that are contrary to the divine goodness.  'Structures of sin' are the expression and effect of personal sins.  They lead their victims to do evil in their turn.  In an analogous sense, they constitute a 'social sin'."
-Catechism of the Catholic Church 1869
Today's Reflection:
Each person who sins cooperates in bringing suffering to the world.  Although some sins are more heinous than others, every sin drags down the moral order and contributes to the debasement of all society.
Although sin is a personal act, it has a corporate effect.  And the corporate effect reaps an evil of greater or lesser degree.  Like our mother Eve, every human being is tempted to distrust of God, to prideful reliance on self, and to inordinate desire for the things of the world.  To the extent that we give in to temptation and sin, we cooperate in the evil one's plans to bring damnation to man.
Where in your life do you distrust God?  How do you rely on yourself pridefully, rather than surrendering to His will?  What things of the world do you desire that are not good for your soul?
