Journey's End

"Happy is the man who keeps the hour St Thomas Aquinas2 of death always in mind, and daily prepares for it."

                                 -Thomas À Kempis

For Reflection:

At first glance, this quote seems to be a contradiction. How can one be happy if he is always keeping his death in mind? How can the reality of death lead us to true happiness of life? What part does preparation for death play in our happiness?

(See tomorrow's Grace Line for one saint's admonition that also implies a happy life.)

Preface    Page xi

And the grateful God cries out: Now, my turn!  The saints have given me the gift of themselves: can I respond other than by giving myself, without restriction and without measure?...I must be the soul of their souls, I must penetrate and imbue them with my divinity, as fire penetrates iron; by showing myself to their spirits...so that, "knowing me as I know them, they may become Gods themselves."
