We frequently get mail from readers who ask about mediums in their area who claim the gifts they are using to contact the dead and divine the future came from God. Can this be true?

Absolutely not – but this doesn’t stop mediums from advertising themselves as prophets of God.

One of the most well-known cases is that of Teresa Caputo, aka the Long Island Medium, who has a statue of Our Lady on her front lawn and claims to be a practicing Catholic.

The celebrated medium John Edward also refers to himself as Catholic as does George Anderson who claims in his promotional literature that he channels saints such as St. Therese, St. Rita, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

Someone recently wrote to our ministry asking about another medium who claimed to have had a religious experience at a Marian shrine in Pennsylvania where she allegedly heard Our Lady’s voice asking for help. She agreed to help and, a few days later, claimed to have seen a man wearing a monk’s robe who told her his name was Padre Pio. Shortly after this, she began being visited by souls who had passed away. Thus began her career as a psychic medium, life-coach counselor and Reiki master healer.

This is a textbook example of Satan’s most effective ruse - a ploy even the Bible warns us about – to appear as an “angel of light” (2 Cor 11:14). And he can do this with even the most well-intentioned people, especially those who are actively engaging in the occult arts, such as what Edward, Anderson, and the Long Island Medium are doing.

Regardless of how Christian they might appear, the Lord Himself has guaranteed us that He will not work through mediums under any condition.

In Deuteronomy 18:10-12 He specifically tells us: “Let there not be found among you anyone who immolates his son or daughter in the fire, nor a fortune-teller or soothsayer, charmer, diviner, or caster of spells, nor one who consults ghosts and spirits or seeks oracles from the dead. Anyone who does such things is an abomination to the Lord.”

This is why the Catechism teaches: “All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to ‘unveil’ the future” (No. 2116).

The Lord does not contradict Himself; therefore, He would never agree to work with anyone “who consults ghosts."

Just because a medium’s work brings good feelings to a client doesn’t mean it’s from God.  Satan is more than capable of making people feel good. One glance at the latest drug and alcohol addiction statistics proves this to be true. Just because something feels right doesn’t mean it is.

Even though many mediums sincerely believe that their “gift” came from God, they are dangerously mistaken.

All mediums should be avoided. No exceptions.
