A 44 year-old woman from Reading, Pennsylvania who was involved in a longtime extramarital affair has been charged with the murder of five babies after her husband and daughter found the remains hidden in coolers in the couple's apartment.
FoxNews.com is reporting that Michele Kalina has been charged with homicide after Kalina's husband, Jeffrey Kalina, and 19 year-old daughter found the remains stored in a locked closet. DNA tests on the bones found that at least four of the five babies were born alive and were then killed either by strangulation, poisoning or neglect.
Authorities say the boyfriend, with whom Kalina had been having an affair since 1996, fathered three and possibly four of the victims. Tests on the fifth baby were inconclusive.
Jeffrey Kalina said he suspected at least once that his wife was pregnant, but her boyfriend never did. Apparently, Kalina told the men she had cysts on her fallopian tubes that she would have drained periodically, but they would return and start growing again.
Police found no record of Kalina receiving prenatal care or delivery at local hospitals, except for one time in 2003 when she gave birth to a daughter who was given up for adoption. The boyfriend claims he had no idea about this child either.
Kalina, who has an exemplary work record with a local home health care service, has given little information to police except to say she is an alcoholic who is prone to blackouts.
She and her husband have two children, a 19-year-old daughter and had a 13-year-old son with cerebral palsy who died in 2000. Authorities say his death is not suspicious.
