In an article appearing in the Catholic Stand, author and breast cancer survivor Birgit Jones is asking the public to “Do This Survivor a Favor – Don’t Go Komen Pink For Me.”

With October designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Jones admits that it’s a tough month for her. A breast cancer survivor of almost 13 years, she is a carrier of the BRCA1 gene which cost her a great-grandmother who was in her 40’s when she died and her mother who was just 58 when the same cancer claimed her life. In addition to having cancer herself, this deadly disease tried to steal the life of her 28-year-old daughter who was diagnosed with breast cancer while pregnant. Thankfully, both her daughter and her grandchild survived.

Jones has long been a voice in support of breast cancer victims and survivors, which is why she is speaking out now, when organizations like Susan G. Komen are ramping up their “pink forces” for next month.

Beware! Jones says. “What lies beneath the pink may shock you."

“As a cancer survivor, I’m saddened and frustrated by all of the well-intentioned supporters and victims who are co-opted by organizations like Susan G Komen. Their walk/run for the cure events lead them to believe that they are part of the solution,” Jones writes.

But they’re not. In fact, they’re part of the problem.

Jones goes on to list several important facts why people should avoid Komen if they want to donate money to help breast cancer survivors.

First, Komen donates a large sum of money to Planned Parenthood clinics. Last year, they gave more than $450K to the nation’s largest abortion provider.

Second, even though it’s denied by pro-abortion groups and others who want to acquire more donors, medical papers and research confirm the connection between abortion and breast cancer.

Third, Jones reminds that even though it claims otherwise, Planned Parenthood provides 0% of mammograms in this country. “The only breast cancer service provided by Planned Parenthood is instruction on self-examination,” Jones adds.

Komen had gone to great lengths to undercut other charities, even going so far as suing other cancer charities who used the word “cure” and the color “pink” in their efforts. “Filling their own coffers outranks a spirit of cooperation with a common goal,” Jones writes.

So what do actual cancer patients need most from you?

“Do this cancer survivor a favor – don’t walk/run for the ‘cure’ and don’t buy pink merchandise," Jones says. "Instead, donate to a real cancer patient. In this way, you’ll be assured that your money is actually doing some good. Otherwise, there is a risk of helping to pay exorbitant salaries and donations to abortion clinics.”

She goes on to say that the flawed fundraising goals of Komen and some other organizations employ smoke and mirrors.

“The vast funds raised aren’t as effective for actual patients/victims, as you’d think. If you want to feel good and do good, go, volunteer – drive a cancer patient to chemotherapy, clean their house, organize some meals for their family, watch their kids, pray for them, send them cards, or just give them a bit of cash for medical expenses. You may not have a pink shirt to show for it but at least you will have really done something significant.”

Komen’s association with Planned Parenthood sparked an uproar in 2012 when several diocese cut ties with the organization over their support for the abortion giant. Komen originally responded by cutting those ties but, when faced with backlash from abortion supporters, quickly reinstated their funding. The public relations nightmare left a black mark on the organization that exists to this day.

This is why many people who want to donate to organizations that work to raise awareness of breast cancer are looking for other charities to support.
