Bye Bye, Planned Parenthood

President-elect Donald J. Trump (R) President-elect Donald J. Trump (R)

Commentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS

Planned Parenthood’s reign of terror over the lives of the unborn – and taxpayer wallets – is about to end as voters elect pro-life Republican Donald J. Trump as president of the United States and maintain a pro-life majority in both houses of Congress.

The days of cozy meetings in the Oval Office, government imposed mandates and legislation aimed at forcing taxpayers to fund abortion have come to an abrupt end with the election of Trump along with solid pro-life majorities in both houses.

Trump won a total of 306 electoral votes on Tuesday compared to Hillary Clinton’s 232 – a result no one saw coming.

Hotly contested Congressional races also swung in favor of pro-life candidates with conservatives maintaining control of the Senate by a 51-47 margin and the House by 236-191.

The ramifications of these results is seismic for the pro-life cause because it allows conservatives to choose at least one new Supreme Court Justice and possibly more, which could lead to the overturning of Roe v. Wade – abortion legislation that even the pro-abortion Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has criticized. Trump has promised to nominate justices in the tradition of the late pro-life champion, Antonin Scalia.

Trump has also made it quite clear that he is committed to defunding Planned Parenthood as long as they perform abortions and promises to allocate those funds to community-based clinics. Both the House and the Senate have already voted to defund Planned Parenthood but the bill was vetoed by President Barack Obama. The next time around, it is almost certain to pass.

The administration of the new president-elect has also vowed to protect religious institutions from government mandates that force them to provide insurance coverage that violates their religious beliefs.

Pro-life leaders from around the country are hailing this as a “new day” for the prolife cause.

“Today is a great day for America and the Church, and a debt of gratitude is owed to all who boldly spoke up, worked, and voted for pro-life candidates, starting with our new President-elect,” said Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life.

“Our nation will now embark on a path to eliminate abortion and to foster the freedom of the Church. We will be able to advance such an agenda because of the pro-life majorities that now exist both in the House of Representatives and in the Senate.”

Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser credited pro-life voters everywhere, particularly in the key swing states of Florida, Ohio and North Carolina, for bringing about this significant moment in the sacred fight for life.

“This is an historic moment for the pro-life movement. There are four critical pro-life goals now within our reach: end painful late-term abortions, codify the Hyde Amendment, defund Planned Parenthood, and appoint pro-life Supreme Court Justices,” Dannenfelser said in a statement.

Just to be sure president-elect Trump makes good on his promises, a petition is already underway, courtesy of LifeSiteNews.com, urging him to follow through on his many promises that include signing the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and re-enacting the Mexico City Policy which will ban U.S. funding of abortion overseas.

As political pundits across America shake their heads and wonder what happened yesterday, the faithful can only bow their heads in profound thanks and gratitude to the God who intervened mightily on their behalf.

The Almighty has done great things for us, and holy is His name!
