Catholic Doctor Punished for Refusing Abortion

girl boy logoAn Catholic doctor in Australia may have his licensed revoked after refusing to abort a 19 week-old baby girl because her parents wanted a boy.

The Daily Mail is reporting on the story of Dr. Mark Hobart, a general practitioner from the suburbs of Melbourne who is under investigation for refusing the abortion and for failing to refer the couple to another doctor.

Dr. Hobart, 55, who is a devout Catholic claimed that the request "offended my moral conscience"

State law allows abortion up to 24 weeks and doctors who object to the practice are obligated to refer the patients to another doctor.

However, Dr. Hobart says he knows of no other doctor who would perform a sex-selective abortion.

"It's very wrong, I don't know any doctor in Victoria that would be willing to refer a woman that wanted to have an abortion just because of gender at 19 weeks," he told Nine News. "I refused to refer the patient because there was no medical reason to do it and it offended my moral conscience."

Months later, when we went public with the story, complaints from members of the Medical Board of Victoria prompted an investigation into whether or not the doctor had failed his patients.

Dr. Hobart is standing firm, however. "I think it demonstrates the problem with abortion law that stops doctors from using their conscience whether it is appropriate or not."

The couple, who are originally from India, did not lodge a complaint against the doctor and found another doctor who performed the abortion a few days later.

The woman is now pregnant again and has decided not to find out the sex of the child before it is born.

Sex selection abortion has wreaked havoc on the populations of countries such as India and China where the ratio of males to females has been severely impacted. For instance, China now has about 117 boys for every 100 girls (the norm is 104 to 100), which has resulted in leaving as many as 15 percent of Chinese men without a wife.

India's population is even more lopsided with an estimated 100 girls for every 124 boys. In a 15-year period, over five million girls have "disappeared" from the population, presumably killed.
