Healthy British Couple Commits Suicide to Protest Assisted Suicide Laws

By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Journalist A healthy elderly British couple chose to commit suicide together on Sunday to protest UK laws concerning assisted suicide. The couple, Dennis Milner, 83 and his wife Flora, 81, were found dead in their Berkshire home shortly before 9:00 a.m. on Nov. 1. The Milners sent a suicide letter and statement to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) saying they chose to “peacefully end our lives” in order to avoid “a living death.”   In the note, they expressed their desire to draw attention to the “serious human dilemma” faced by those who want to end their lives. The couple claimed to have enjoyed “a happy, loving and exciting life” but said they had “just one serious and disappointing criticism of our society.” “Today we have been denied what we believe to be our basic human right – to terminate our own lives, in our own home, at our own choosing, with our loved ones around us, without anyone having to face any legal possibilities or harassment,” they said. According to the couple’s daughter, her parents were in good health but wanted to end their lives before they were unable to care for themselves. “I think they made this decision because they’d had a very positive life. They’d enjoyed life,” she said. “They’d always said they wanted a positive death, they wanted a good death.” She and her siblings supported their parents’ decision and said they had been informed of their intentions to kill themselves but said the couple had never given them a specific date, saying only, “We won’t be here for Christmas.” An autopsy has been performed and authorities are waiting for toxology reports before determining the cause of death. "What kind of a society are we developing when needing care is deemed a fate worse than death," asks attorney and prominent anti-euthanasia activist, Wesley Smith. "This story is a warning of the zeitgeist of our times: Once the meme sinks into the public’s consciousness that suicide is a 'right' and self killing is an acceptable answer to suffering–or even the fear of future suffering–then there are no lines that can be drawn and this kind of tragedy becomes inevitable." © All Rights Reserved, Living His Life Abundantly®/Women of Grace®  http://www.womenofgrace.com
