It's Payback Time for the IRS

Commentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS

House Republicans are not about to let the IRS get away with their outrageously partisan conduct over the past few years and are proposing a slew of new laws designed to check the agency's power and give more protection to citizens against this kind of abuse.

Politico is reporting that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) will announce today that he plans to schedule floor votes before the August recess on several bills that were crafted in direct response to the IRS' targeting of conservative groups.

In addition to a bill that will prohibit the IRS from being involved in the implementation or enforcement of ObamaCare, Cantor will also propose a new law that will allow Americans to record all conversations they have with federal enforcement officials.

Another bill would require more stringent approvals for all government conferences with the hopes of putting an end to lavish affairs that waste millions of taxpayer dollars.

Also on the table will be a bill that allows federal agencies to put senior career officials on investigative leave - with or without pay - when they are under investigation for serious abuses.

Cantor would also like to see customer service performance tied to all employee reviews and wants to require congressional approval of regulations that have a significant impact on the economy.

A Cantor aide told Politico the bills will “give Republicans members the ability to address the growing distrust of Washington emanating from recent scandals and stories, especially in the case of the IRS.”
