Commentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDSAn article posted on the feminist website, Jezebel, entitled “We Paid Etsy Witches to Curse Charlie Kirk,” is sparking outrage among both friends and foes of Kirk, an iconic political activist who was gunned down on the campus of Utah Valley University on September 10.
Even though the Jezebel article has since been taken down, various news sources report that it was written by an unnamed reporter who brags about how easy it was to buy a curse on Kirk via the popular arts and crafts website, Etsy.
"I can now buy a curse as easily as I can buy a phone charger. On the mystical website Etsy, you can find a spell for just about anything," the writer claims.
After referring to Kirk as a “far-right misogynist,” she writes: "These days, witches cater to more than just personal grudges. And it's not uncommon for them to channel their energy toward thwarting Republicans . . . Are you interested in punishing Kirk for the years of regressive rhetoric he's shouted at America's youth and anyone within earshot? Here at Jezebel, we're about to find out if there's a spell for that."
As it turns out, there are plenty of witches for hire at Etsy. The writer promptly hires one to place a “Make Everyone Hate Him” curse upon Kirk.
Ironically, she goes on to stress: “I want to make it clear, I'm not calling on dark forces to cause him harm. I just want him to wake up every morning with an inexplicable zit. I want his podcast microphone to malfunction every time he hits record. I want his blue blazers to suddenly all be one size too small. I want one of his socks to always be sliding down his foot. I want his thumb to grow too big to tweet. To ruin his day with the collective feminist power of the Etsy coven would be my life's greatest joy."
Thinking that she can dictate the terms of the curse is a clear indication that this writer knows little or nothing about the ways of Satan. The first thing a beginner is taught is that once called upon to act, no mortal tells Satan what to do. Only God Himself has that authority.
But that’s not the end of this story. It’s only the beginning.
According to Megyn Kelly, journalist and popular Sirius XM podcaster, after purchasing the curse, one of the witches contacted the writer to ask if she wanted to “amplify the energetic support of the curse for an extra $50.”
The writer was only too happy to accept the offer. In order to make the spell more powerful, she had to provide the witch with Kirk’s date of birth. After doing so, the witch later confirmed that she had performed the hex and that it was successful.
The writer then asked when it would be effective and was told that she would see the first results within 2-3 weeks. This transaction took place in late August, about 18 days before Charlie’s death.
Not yet satisfied, Jezebel then reached out to a third witch, who calls herself Priestess Lilin, with the hopes that if enough people cursed Kirk the results would be stronger. Lilin obliged, and followed up a day later by sending the writer proof of the hex she had cast. It was a photo of Charlie Kirk in flames, “the edges slowly curling inward, engulfing Charlie’s ridiculous little scrunched up face.” The writer added: “I imagine. Trust the unseen. Chills.”
The article was published on September 8, three days before Charlie was assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University.
After the shooting, Jezebel issued an editor’s note on the top of the article, saying: "This story was published on September 8. Jezebel condemns the shooting of Charlie Kirk in the strongest possible terms. We do not endorse, encourage, or excuse political violence of any kind."
It has since been replaced with another note from its editor: “On Monday, September 8, we published the humorous piece titled ‘We Paid Some Etsy Witches to Curse Charlie Kirk.’ The piece was intended as satire and made it absolutely clear that we wished no physical harm. We stand by every word.”
If they stand by every word, does that mean they meant him to be cursed, to have everyone hate him, and to see him punished for years for what they call “regressive rhetoric?”
Apparently so. They follow this statement with another note: “But in light of Wednesday’s events, and on the recommendation of our lawyers, we have removed the text. To be clear, this decision was driven by an abundance of caution for our staff and to avoid the piece being misused in a tense and volatile environment, not by a change in our editorial judgment. We may republish at a later date, but out of compassion for the victim’s family, we want to make clear that we prioritise an end to violence over anyone wanting to read about Etsy witches.”
Their misguided compassion for the victim’s family comes far too late.
As Kelly reports, the Kirks, who are familiar with Christian teaching on the subject of evil, heard about this curse. Erika Kirk was particularly rattled by it. On the night before his death, the couple contacted a friend, who may have been a Catholic priest, to come and pray over Charlie.
“She [Erika] eventually worked it through and so did Charlie but, as she later told me, ‘weapons will form but not prosper, that Satan and those witches have no power,’” Kelly recounts. “Of course, God’s will is the one that matters, and His blessing over Charlie was real and palpable. All you had to do was spend time with Charlie to know that.”
But why torture a family like this, Kelly asks? “Why do this vile thing to a young couple, parents to two babies living in accordance with the gospel, deeply in love, and yes, political, but doing nothing other than speaking publicly about their views and their desires to make other people’s lives better.”
Who would do such a vile thing?
“Jezebel, that’s who,” Kelly responds, “and unbelievably, Etsy.”
The people behind this evil should be called out, Kelly says, and calls upon Etsy to “stop this practice [of hiring out witches] immediately and get back to arts and crafts and jewelry” and for both entities to “issue an immediate full-throated apology to Erika Kirk for introducing this awfulness into her beautiful family and causing her or Charlie any distress whatsoever in what would be the waning hours of his life.”
