Media Praise Pro-Abortion Episode on NBC's "Friday Night Lights"

By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Journalist The mainstream media are applauding an episode of NBC's "Friday Night Lights" in which a pregnant high-school girl decides to have an abortion after a high school principal advises her to consider only her own interests without any mention of the life of the child. Newsbusters.org is reporting that the July 9 episode of the network drama featured a pregnant high school girl named Becky Sproles who worried about not being able to take of a baby. Her high school principal said that if Sproles were her own daughter, she would advise her to "think about her life, think about what's important to her and what she wants." As a result, Sproles opts for an abortion. "While the characters did not deal lightly with the issue, the show's justification for the abortion relied on several common pro-choice arguments, including economics and self-interest," Newsbusters reports. Not surprisingly, the episode spawned rave reviews from the pro-abortion mainstream media. Slate writer Emily Brazelon said the principal's advice to Sproles to "think about her life" was the "perfect thing" to say to a teen in that situation. Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker praised the show, saying it delivered "one of its finest hours ever." The Atlantic's Tony Lee blogged the following day that he was impressed by the "nuanced, apolitical manner" that the writers used to convey the dilemma facing this pregnant teenage girl. "Lee described the episode as 'devoid of political posturing or grandstanding,' ignoring the fact that the writers' decision to include a pro-choice decision is itself a political statement," Newsbusters points out. While the episode did include mentions of alternatives to abortion, including crisis pregnancy centers and adoption agencies, the pro-life view was generally depicted as being obtuse and out of touch. © All Rights Reserved, Living His Life Abundantly®/Women of Grace®  http://www.womenofgrace.com
