A former soldier and revert to the Catholic faith has designed a new tool to help Catholics keep control of their busy lives while still making time for God.
Victor Delacruz knows what it’s like to be too busy for God. After four years of military service, he moved to Manhattan to pursue his dream of becoming a jazz musician. But the pressures of the Big Apple quickly got to him. He was soon depressed and full of anxiety from the pressure to succeed. He responded by “diving deeper into the spectacles of the city and trying new things” but that only made his life busier.
He was feeling lost when he returned to California for his grandmother’s funeral. She had been a devout Catholic all her life and while there, he realized where he was going wrong. He had stopped practicing his faith and he needed to get back on track with God.
But that was easier said than done! Working as a personal trainer and fitness coach and attending New York University graduate school, he needed a way to keep control of his hectic lifestyle and still make time for God. This led to the creation of a personal planner which helps people stay on track with their goals and dreams but also with their faith. Implementing the best practices from religious leaders, fitness professionals, high ranking military officers and other top performers, he developed a powerful new spiritual tool known as the Catholic Planner.
The heart of the Planner is a place where you can record the state of your relationship with Jesus along with your hopes and goals for the year. A monthly liturgical calendar highlights Saint Feast Days and the “Weekly Retreat” provides the Gospel for the coming Sunday along with a place to write and reflect on the message. The “Good Habits and Catholic Rituals” section reminds you about personal activities that promote healthy well-being such as reminding you about your workout, while reminding you of Catholic rituals that can strengthen your spiritual life such as Mass and praying the Rosary.
When Victor began to use the Planner, he found that it helped him to manage his daily routine so that he always had time for God. It made a real difference in his life and he began to wonder if others might benefit from the Planner as well.
He decided to self-fund the project and within two months of its launch, it has already reached thousands of people across America. Bishop Richard Garcia of Monterey, California was so impressed he sent a copy to the Pope!
He is now planning to launch a Spanish version, a version just for students, one for teachers, a compact version, and a weekly retreat journal.
The company is also planning a new Catholic Planner APP which they’re hoping will help connect the Church to the new generation.
The best news of all is that 15 percent of the proceeds from the sale of the Planner is donated to charities that are dedicated to eliminating poverty, particularly the Catholic Worker project.
Since the summer of 2015, I've had the opportunity to volunteer with these amazing men and women of great Faith,” Delacruz said. “Their genuine dedication to service and humility -- especially in a city apathetic towards these virtues-- has been a critical part of staying grounded in my Faith while living in Manhattan. The Catholic Planner wouldn't exist without their influence on my life."
