KY Governor-Elect Matt Bevin
Kim Davis, the woman who was thrown in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses, will get relief from Governor-Elect Matt Bevin who has promised to change the state’s marriage forms to accommodate those clerks whose beliefs are violated by gay unions.
LifeSiteNews is reporting on the news out of Frankfort, Kentucky where Kim Davis learned that the reforms she fought for will come about on December 8, the day Matt Bevin becomes governor of the state.
Davis, a born-again Christian who serves as the clerk for Rowan County, believes issuing the licenses is a sin and asked to have her name removed from the form because it implied her personal consent.
Former governor Steve Beshear refused to accommodate her, as did Jack Conway, the Democratic candidate for governor who suffered a surprise defeat by Bevin earlier this month.
Beshear’s refusal to grant the simple accommodation resulted in Davis spending five days in jail when she refused to issue the licenses after the Supreme Court’s decision in the Obergefell v. Hodges case made same-sex marriage the law of the land.
Speaking with reporters shortly after his November 3 election, Bevin said, "One thing I will take care of right away is we will remove the names of the county clerks from the marriage form. We will take the names off those forms. We will do that by executive order. We will do it right out of the gate."
When asked about other politicians who say the forms cannot be changed without legislative action, Bevin called the argument “baloney”.
“We've already changed those forms three times for crying out loud," he said.
Mat Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel, a law firm dedicated to preserving religious liberty, was elated at Bevin’s announcement.
"Kim Davis and Liberty Counsel applaud Governor-elect Matt Bevin for his leadership in protecting the rights of conscience of all County Clerks," Staver said. "It is refreshing to have someone with the integrity, character, and concern of Matt Bevin leading the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Gov. Steve Beshear could have resolved this marriage license issue a long time ago, but he chose to ignore the plea for help," he said.
"Governor-elect Bevin's impending executive order is a welcome relief for Kim Davis and should be for everyone who cherishes religious freedom," he concluded.
