New Lawmakers Open First Session with Prayer

The first official act of the new conservative majority in the House was to ask the Lord to come to their assistance as they vowed to "give Him thanks in the great assembly."
The Family Research Council (FRC) is reporting that Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) opened the first organizational meeting of the 112th Congress on Wednesday with prayer and a reading of Psalm 35. Before launching into the day's business, Pence recalled how the first Congress of the United States convened with a reading of the 35th Psalm and a prayer led by the Rev. Mr. Duche on September 7, 1774.
Pence proceeded to read the same Psalm which is a prayer for help against unjust enemies. It asks the Lord to come to the aid of the righteous as they give Him "thanks in the great assembly."
The FRC is inviting all men and women to come to the assistance of our country's leaders by pledging to lift them up in prayer.
"Given the seemingly incessant scandal, ethical wavering, and lack of moral backbone in Washington today, it's no surprise that politicians are generally not held in high esteem. What is surprising is that politicians are not held up nearly enough in prayer," the FRC states on its website.
Because the Bible instructs us that "supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, [should] be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority," (1 Timothy 2:1-2), the FRC has launched a new campaign asking Americans to pledge to pray for our elected officials at least once per week.
To date, more than 30,000 Americans have signed on. The goal is to have one million people agree to keep our country's leadership in prayer.
