By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Writer With the 2008 election only weeks away, the nation’s largest Catholic pro-life organization is launching the “Is This What You Mean?” campaign which is aimed at forcing abortion advocates to drop the clever “choice” rhetoric and make them admit to the ugly reality of the procedure they are supporting. "The last thing that abortion supporters want to talk about is abortion," said the organizer of the new campaign, Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. "But this campaign puts the words of the abortionists before the public, so that those who vote in favor of abortion can no longer hide from its violent reality." The campaign has two primary purposes: 1) to reveal the nature of the abortion procedure to the public; and 2) to challenge public officials, candidates and others who support the legality of abortion to admit what abortion is. Through a new website, participants in the campaign are given access to a variety of source materials. Flyers containing quotes from the abortion industry obtained from medical textbooks and court testimony, and illustrations of abortion procedures, are available along with DVD’s and YouTube videos. Especially during the upcoming election season, pro-life people are urged to use the materials everywhere they can, from town hall meetings with pro-abortion politicians to television and radio programs or wherever “pro-choice” advocates are engaged in spinning the issue away from the ugly truth. There’s no need to fight about it, the campaign literature states. “Those who engage in this project are not being asked to debate the morality or legality of abortion, nor to refute any slogans or arguments. Rather, this project seeks to establish the starting point. ‘What are we talking about when we say abortion?’” This campaign is particularly effective with politicians. “Politicians who support abortion don’t want people to hear the descriptions of it,” the project states. “When challenged with the quotes of abortionists and asked, ‘Is this what you mean?’, they face a dilemma: either they admit that what they support is horrifying, or they demonstrate, by their evasion, that they cannot even admit what they support. Either way, it doesn’t look good for abortion and it doesn’t look good for them.” The campaign was officially kicked off on Capital Hill this week. Father Frank Pavone was joined by Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., former abortionist Dr. Anthony Levatino, Fr. Denis G. Wilde, O.S.A., Fr. Peter J. West, Fr. Victor Salomon, and the Coordinator of Priests for Life's Lay Missionaries, James J. Pinto. "The abortion debate often lacks a starting point, because the word has lost practically all its meaning," Fr. Pavone stated. "We've been visiting Congressional offices, bringing diagrams of the procedure and quotes of abortionists, and then have asked, 'Is this what you mean when you say abortion?'" No doubt there were many uncomfortable politicians on the Hill this week, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen.
