ObamaCare Off to a Rocky Start

Commentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS

Computer glitches and website crashes were the name of the game yesterday as ObamaCare exchanges officially opened for business. Twitchy.com is reporting that people from around the country were beginning to report a variety of glitches and failed attempts to sign-up on the new healthcare exchanges from early yesterday morning.

For instance, a tweet from Kelly Broderick at 1:46 a.m. reported that the Maryland exchange is "not allowing people to sign up or browse."

At 2:26 a.m., "Daylight Disinfectant" reported that the "Oregon exchange is down."

At 2:49 a.m., mwbowler clicked on a tab that asked, "Wanna chat with someone about enrolling in ObamaCare?" and was told "No such user exists."

By 5:26 a.m., Harriet Baldwin was reporting that the California health care exchanges were "offline" and Cathy Miller tweeted this advice at 8:16 a.m. "Recommend waiting on @healthcaregov website-all kinds of access issues & error messages-took me almost an hour just to get an account."

President Barack Obama obviously saw this coming because he warned Americans to expect glitches in a recent interview with National Public Radio.

“In the first week, first month, first three months, I would suspect that there will be glitches,” Obama told NPR NewsSteve Inskeep. “This is 50 states, a lot of people signing up for something. And there are going to be problems. And I guarantee you, there will be problems because we’ve got precedent. When Massachusetts, just one state, set this up, it took quite a long time. It took several months before everything was smoothed out.”

Too bad it never occurred to anyone that they could learn from past mistakes.

While everyone was busy talking about the government shut down yesterday, ObamaCare was proving to be one area of government that will remain impervious to it all, for no other reason than because you can't shut down something that doesn't work.
