Planned Parenthood Defund Ends July 4!

The defunding of Planned Parenthood which was part of the One Big Beautiful Act passed last year is about to expire! Pro-life Americans are being urged to contact their elected officials and insist that this defunding continue.

According to the Daily Signal, U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson says he is planning to do everything in his power to stop the resumption of Planned Parenthood funding which will occur on July 4 if the provision is not extended.

Even though the Hyde amendment prohibits taxpayer funds to directly pay for abortions, Planned Parenthood still receives federal money in the form of grants, contracts and Medicaid reimbursement for other services. When President Donald Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Act into law on July 4, 2025, it cost Planned Parenthood $850 million in federal taxpayer money, resulting in the closure of nearly 50 Planned Parenthood clinics. However, the defunding provision expires on July 4, America’s 250th anniversary.

“It would mar the event,” said Pro-Life Caucus Co-Chair Chris Smith (R-NJ).

The good news is that the One Big Beautiful Bill Act was passed through the process of reconciliation, which requires a simple majority vote rather than the usual 60 votes in the Senate.

While speaking at the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America Gala on Apriil 29, Speaker Johnson said he hopes to use reconciliation to defund Planned Parenthood again.

“We’ve been very creative in how we’ve used that, and we’re intending to do that again,” he said.

The only problem is that this would require a third reconciliation package and not all Republicans are on board with this plan.

Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.Va., told the Signal that he’s 100 percent supportive of a third reconciliation bill but he’s not convinced it will happen.

“I’d love for us to extend the defunding of Planned Parenthood,” Moore said. “It should be one of the most important things that we would consider any third reconciliation bill. I wouldn’t hold my breath on reconciliation 3.0, though. We’re gonna have to move pretty quick if we’re gonna do this.”

Another option would be to try to pass a continuing resolution later in the year to defund Planned Parenthood.

A third option would require the Trump administration to restore the Protect Life Rule, which prohibits Title X family planning funds from going.

As the Signal reports, an official in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is developing a restored Protect Life Rule but it is unclear when it will be finalized.

The bottom line is that government needs to stop funding organizations that kill up to 500,000 Americans a year, and it would be especially meaningful to do so on such an historic day as the 250th anniversary of this nation.

“Nearly 250 years ago, America’s Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, proclaiming the self-evident truth that all men have unalienable rights to ‘Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,’” writes Zachary Mettler of the Daily Citizen. “Our elected representatives in Congress must ensure our nation lives up to its founding principles by barring taxpayer dollars from going to a massive enterprise that kills thousands of innocent Americans annually, depriving them of their right to life.”
