As expected, Planned Parenthood reacted to the devastating funding cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill by filing a lawsuit, citing “serious adverse consequences” for their patients.According to Catholic Vote, the One Big Beautiful Bill includes a provision that will block abortion providers from receiving federal taxpayer dollars via Medicaid for the next 10 years, cutting off hundreds of millions of dollars from Planned Parenthood and its affiliates.
Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report reveals that the organization performed more than 400,000 abortions in 2023 and 2024 and received nearly $800 million from taxpayers.
As a result, the organization immediately filed a lawsuit, citing the fact that more than half of its patients use Medicaid, which means the funding cut would be devastating and force many local health centers to close.
According to CBS News, the lawsuit reads: "Many Planned Parenthood Members will be required to lay off staff and curtail services, with serious adverse consequences for the many patients served at those centers even if they do not use Medicaid to access services. Worse still, Members may be forced to shutter a substantial number of their health centers nationwide, many of which are in rural or underserved areas without alternative providers.”
U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani immediately issued a temporary restraining order on July 7 that lasts 14 days and directs the Department of Health and Human Services to "take all steps necessary to ensure that Medicaid funding continues to be disbursed" to Planned Parenthood.
In response to Talwani’s ruling, a White House official said, "The Trump Administration is ending the forced use of Federal taxpayer dollars to fund or promote elective abortion – a commonsense position that the overwhelming majority of Americans agree with."
Leading prolife political group, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, blasted Planned Parenthood’s latest move in a statement:
“Planned Parenthood’s desperation is showing as they run to the courts again to fix a crisis of their own making. Time after time they rely on unelected judges to bail them out of trouble, rather than fix deep systemic problems internally, like the botched procedures and substandard ‘care’ exposed in a horrifying New York Times investigation,” said Katie Daniel, director of legal affairs and policy counsel for SBA Pro-Life America.
“As Planned Parenthood doubles down on lawfare and abortion politics, they prove exactly why the One Big Beautiful Bill is a historic victory for the people, stopping half a billion dollars in forced taxpayer funding of the corrupt abortion industry for the first time. Life is winning and the nation’s abortion giant won’t be missed as their long decline continues. With far more accessible and comprehensive community health centers outnumbering Planned Parenthoods 15 to 1, women have real choices for their health care needs.”
