Politics May Force Gov. Sebelius to Sign Pro-Life Bill

Politics may soon force the hand of pro-abortion Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to sign a bill that will require abortion clinics to provide patients with an ultrasound image and enable them to hear the heart beat of their fetus before undergoing an abortion. Supporters say the tactic convinces 90 percent of women to forego abortion.
On March 17, the Kansas Senate overwhelmingly passed SB 238, a bill that many believe will dramatically curtail abortion rates in their state. "You can show them pictures, you can show them videos, but until you show them their baby, that's what really makes the difference," said Tim Wisner, founder of the Choices Clinic in east Wichita to KSNW News of Wichita after the Kansas Senate overwhelmingly passed the new bill. He claims that 90 percent of the time, women change their mind about having an abortion after seeing an ultra-sound and/or hearing a heartbeat.
However, this puts the radically pro-abortion Gov. Sebelius in a delicate position. Her nomination for Secretary of Health and Human Services brought a wave of negative publicity to the Obama Administration for her strident pro-abortion position, which may force her to sign the bill in a conciliatory gesture.
"If she really cared about women and didn't care about protecting the abortion industry, she'd sign it," said David Gittrich of Kansans for Life to KSNW News in Wichita.
Abortion supporters say the timing of the bill is no accident. "It's meant to put her in a precarious situation," said Julie Burkhart of the pro-choice group ProKanDo.
Opponents are also concerned about provisions that mandate abortion clinics to provide patients with a list of crisis pregnancy centers.
"What this bill does and what it says is that women do not have the intellectual capacity to make good healthcare decisions for themselves," Burkhart said.
Gov. Sebelius has given no indication if she’ll sign or veto the bill. Her spokesperson said “she’s studying it carefully."
