Poll Finds Little Support for Abortion in Public Health Care Plan

By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Journalist More than half of all Americans polled in a new national survey disagree with the idea that the government has an obligation to provide abortion services under a public health care plan. A substantial number also said they would be less likely to support a plan that includes abortion coverage. LifeNews.com is reporting on a new poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies between Aug. 30 and Sept. 1 among 800 registered voters found 43 percent of those polled to be less likely to support a public health care plan if it included abortion. Forty-six percent said it made no difference to them. However, a whopping 58 percent disagreed with the statement:  “If the government is going to make a public health plan available for all Americans it has an obligation to provide abortion services under that plan.” Only 38 percent support it. Phrased another way, 55 percent of Americans agreed with this statement: “Whatever my opinion on the issue, I think it would be wrong for the government to pay for abortions," compared with 42 percent who don't agree. By a 52-44 percent margin, Americans agree with the statement, “I do not want the government to help fund health care plans that fund abortions.” Broken down by party affiliation, 77 to 80 percent of Republicans agree with these statements, 54 to 60 percent of Independents and 38 percent of Democrats. “The bottom line is this: including government funds for abortion on-demand in health care reform is unappealing to American voters nationwide, women and men alike,” Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, a pro-life women's group, told LifeNews.com. “This may be surprising to elites, but it is not to the rest of America. Americans realize pro-abortion feminists have dramatically overrepresented a minority position, misstating the centrality and ‘need’ for abortion on-demand," she said. Even more telling is the fact that women voters were less likely to support a plan that included abortion than men. Forty-four percent of women and 41 percent of men are less likely to support a public option that abortion coverage. "If the Congressional leadership and the President fall on the sword of abortion coverage, pleasing their allies and weaving it into the fabric of our daily lives, they do so at the peril of the entire bill and their own political futures," Dannenfelser said. © All Rights Reserved, Living His Life Abundantly®/Women of Grace®  http://www.womenofgrace.com
