Firefighters in the south Texas town of Port Isabel were stunned to find a perfectly intact statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe amidst the ruins of a blaze that totally destroyed the house around it.
KRGV.com is reporting that the Calvillo family home was completely destroyed in the blaze which stripped them of everything except their faith - and a statue of Our Lady.
"We just watched it burn down little by little," said Fidel Calvillo. "It burned up in flames; everything went up in flames.”
All that was left was a statue of Our Lady which was found resting against a fire-blackened wall. Calvillo said the fire didn't touch her at all, not even the plastic flowers on her head or the wooden rosary beads that were hanging around her neck.
Calvillo believes it is a sign that everything is going to be alright.
"I want to thank the good Lord that nobody was hurt and the whole community is trying to help us," he said.
Meanwhile, the family is waiting for a team from the state fire marshal's office to conduct an investigation before the family will be allowed in to retrieve the statue and anything else that might have survived.
