Sudanese Mother is Freed!

meriam ibrahimAn attorney representing that imprisoned Sudanese mother Meriam Ibrahim has announced that his client, and her two children, were set free from a Khartoum prison today.

Fox News is reporting that Ibrahim was released today and is expected to meet with officials in the U.S. Embassy tomorrow.

"We have confirmed through her attorney that she has been released from prison today," said Tina Ramirez of Hardwired, a Christian advocacy group that has been working closely with Ibrahim's family and lawyer during Meriam's months-long incarceration.

"Sources close to the situation tell FoxNews.com that Ibrahim was whisked away to a confidential location and that her lawyers will be meeting with representatives from the U.S. Embassy on Tuesday," Fox reports.

Meriam, 27, was sentenced to death in May for allegedly converting from Islam to Christianity. The physician who is married to a naturalized American citizen, was turned into Muslim authorities by a family member.

The case against her was based on the premise that even though she was born and raised Christian by her Ethiopian mother, she was the daughter of a Muslim and was therefore considered Muslim according to sharia law. Declaring herself Christian, which she did even in the face of her own death sentence, was therefore considered an act of apostasy. And because she married a Christian, a union not recognized by Muslim authorities, she was found guilty of adultery by authorities who sentenced her to 100 lashes.

Meriam and her 20 month old son, Martin, were thrown into prison in February even though she was pregnant at the time and was forced to give birth last month to her daughter, Maya, while in shackles.

"The case became an international cause, with several U.S. lawmakers and the State Department blasting the decision as barbaric," Fox reports. "Sudan's national news service SUNA said the Court of Cessation in Khartoum on Monday canceled the death sentence after defense lawyers presented their case, and that the court ordered her release."

Meriam and her husband Wani were married in 2011 and operate several businesses, including a farm, south of Khartoum, the country’s capital.

It is not yet known what the couple's plans are for the future.
