Does Aztec Dancing Belong in Church?

HL writes: “Can you please help me with information about Aztec dancing and whether it’s a concern. Our parish hosts a yearly feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and our bishop comes every year to celebrate. Aztec dancers, some very immodestly dressed, would dance during the offertory and incense the image of Our Lady. I don’t feel that it’s appropriate that they participate at our Mass and I spoke to my pastor about it. Our pastor felt he needs more substantial information because the one that he sent me is in favor of the dancers. I personally don’t feel edified or pious when the Aztec dancers participate at mass because their dancing and music are distracting. Could you please help me with this? I have young and impressionable sons and I’m not sure I feel right having them see barely clothed people dancing in rather mesmerizing ways.”

Put forth all your effort

December 12
"Behold, you have heard my mandate, my humble son; go and put forth all your effort."
-Our Lady of Guadalupe
Today's Reflection:
During her first apparition, Our Lady of Guadalupe spoke these words. Today, imagine our Mother speaking these words to your heart: "Daughter (or son), 'go and put forth all your effort.'" What specific task are you being called to say "yes" to? How is God asking you to give your very own fiat this very day?
Take courage and have faith!

Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

December 12
Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
“The Word of God is present in [Mary], dwells within her, and takes hold of all the capabilities of her intelligence, her heart, her sensibility. Her entire being is mobilized by God and for God.”
-Father Marie-Dominique Philippe, O.P.
For Reflection
Reread the above GraceLine. Enter into the mystery these words express. Let them move you interiorly. Through the use of your imagination “be” with Mary as the Word of God grows within her. What thoughts, inspirations, and insights come to you? In what way does this aspect of Mary’s “waiting” prove the truth of yesterday’s GraceLine? What do you make of the last sentence, especially the word “mobilized,” in light of the time of Mary’s maternity? Our Lady of Guadalupe appears to Juan Diego pregnant with Jesus. How do you think she images this quote through her apparitions?

The Genius of Guadalupe

The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe isn’t situated in the middle of Advent out of coincidence. Advent was made for women – and not just because we bake all the cookies and buy all the gifts. Like us, Mary was made for this season and the way she completed her mission in Guadalupe gives us a blueprint of how to confront the challenges of today.

The Tilma: Defying Science for Over 450 Years

Standing at a height of fifty-six inches, with her head inclined modestly to the right, the pristine image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, impressed upon the fibers of a Mexican peasant’s cloak in 1531, remains a mystery to modern science. In an age when technology can clone humans, it cannot explain how the effigy was made, or how it has remained intact for more than 450 years.
