Three Women “Marry” in Brazil

polygamy ringsCommentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS

The global culture continues to deteriorate as three Brazilian women create a new definition of “family” and celebrate a polyamorous civil union.

According to the AFP, the three women, who are choosing to remain anonymous, consist of a businesswoman and a dentist who are both 32, and a 34 year-old office manager. They have been living together for years but decided to take an “oath of love” when they felt it was time to have a child.

One of the partners in threesome told a local media  outlet that "our union is the fruit of love.”

She goes on to say: "We are preparing for my pregnancy.... The legalization is a way for the baby and for us to not end up abandoned and penniless. We want to enjoy the same maternal rights that everyone else has."

A notary public in Rio de Janeiro named Fernanda de Freitas Leitao did the honors early last month.

The union is not a formal marriage, because bigamy is illegal under Brazilian law. None of the women will be permitted to declare joint income or join a healthcare plan for spouses.

However, Leitao says they could probably win these rights in court.

"If they seek these rights before a court, they could obtain them -- and I think they will," Leitao said, added that the “is not just symbolic," because it defines "how they intend to have children."

Brazil permitted another threesome to enter into a civil union in 2012 when a man and two women “wed” in Sao Paulo state.

As the AFP reports, both arrangements are based on a Supreme Court ruling that in 2011 authorized notary publics to hold civil union ceremonies for gay and lesbian couples.

According to Leitao, "all the principles and fundamentals" of that ruling "can also be applied to polyamorous relationships."

These developments are not sitting well with the general public in Brazil, which is mostly Catholic with a large evangelical Christian population.

"We are on the path towards chaos," said Euder Faber Guedes, head of a major evangelical organization. He considers such relationships an "aberration... opposed to nature as established by God."

Once again, we find that opening the door to homosexual unions has become the legal vehicle for ushering in other unconventional "families", further eroding the status of society's most fundamental unit.

Most heartbreaking of all is that innocent children will now be brought into this unnatural situation which will doom them to a lifetime of struggle, not only to adjust to the stigma of being "different", but to their own natural longing to be raised in the home of the man and woman who created them.
