Triumphant Kim Davis Rallies the Faithful

kim davisThe Kentucky court clerk who faced down the government and its same-sex marriage edict was released from jail yesterday amidst a sea of jubilant supporters but the fight is far from over.

The Associated Press (AP) is reporting on the release of Kim Davis from the Carter County Detention Center in Kentucky yesterday after U.S. District Judge David Bunning ordered her release. He said keeping her behind bars would serve no further purpose because her office has begun issuing marriage licenses to all couples, including same-sex partners.

As a condition for her release, the judge warned her not to continue to stop couples from obtaining licenses.

Her office is now issuing the licenses via a form that now says the license is issued by Rowan County rather than under Davis name. However, because Davis is the Rowan County clerk, she wants the forms revised further to accommodate her religious opposition to same-sex marriage.

These battles are yet to be fought but for the time being, her release was a time of joy and bold professions of faith. “Thank you all so much, I love you all so much. I just want to give God the glory. His people have rallied and you are a strong people,” Davis said shortly after her release.

"We serve a living god who knows where each and every one of us is at. Just keep on pressing. Don't let down because he is here and he is worthy, he is worthy."

Several high-profile figures such as former Arkansas Governor and 2016 Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee are calling upon Kentucky and all states to make reasonable accommodations to Christians who oppose gay marriage rather than forcing them to either violate their conscience or quit.

“If you have to put someone in jail, I volunteer to go,” Huckabee said outside the Detention Center yesterday. “Let me go. Lock me up if you think that's how freedom is best served. Because folks, I am willing to spend the next eight years in the White House leading in this country. But I want you to know I'm willing to spend the next eight years in jail, but I'm not willing to spend the next years in tyranny under people who think they can take our freedom and conscience away."

Her lawyer, Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel, confirmed that Judge Bunning has not yet resolved the matter.

"We've asked for a simple solution -- get her name and authority off the certificate. The judge could order that," Staver said.

Although he stopped short of saying Davis might continue to disobey the law when she returns to work either later this week or Monday, he did say that she “loves God, she loves people, she loves her work, and she will not betray any of those three. She'll do her job good. She'll serve the people ... and she'll also be loyal to God, and she's not going to violate her conscience."

Davis’ case has rallied Christians across America to stand up for what they believe and not allow the government to continue to strip them of their right to the free exercise of religion. Recent years have seen unprecedented threats to religious liberty in the form of mandating health insurance coverage that violates the beliefs of Christians and passage of anti-discrimination laws that provide protection for special classes of people at the expense of believers.

“There is a grave misconception that has been recently fostered in this country that religious liberty is simply the freedom to pick the church of your choice,” warned Family Research president Tony Perkins. “The misconception is that you have the ability to believe as you wish within the four walls of that church and between your two ears, as long as you don't speak about it in public.

"Think about that for a moment. Do you really think William Bradford and the Pilgrims came just seeking to move their church membership? Were there not any churches a little closer that that would not have resulted in so many of them dying that first winter in Plymouth?

"They came for what Kim Davis is standing for. They came for the ability to live their lives according to their Christian faith.”

He added: "Jesus said, blessed are the peacemakers, he did not say blessed are the pacifists. Peace comes through strength and strength comes from standing for the Lord.”
