KAKE.com is reporting on the incident which occurred last weekend at the Guadalupe Clinic in south Wichita, Kansas.
The clinic, which serves the underprivileged, offers a variety of services from general health care and diagnostic tests to prenatal care and pregnancy screening.
The desecration involved a statue of the Blessed Mother which was made out of concrete and stood outside the clinic. Someone found the severed head, which had been broken into several pieces, and brought it to David Gear, executive director of the Guadalupe clinic.
"He was holding the Virgin Mary's head in his hands and he brought it to me and it was just heartbreaking to think that someone would disrespect a statue of the Virgin Mary that way," said Gear.
Another statue, a wooden image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, was stolen from the grounds.
"It's heartbreaking to have somebody come in and do something like this to something that is treasured items that belong to the clinic," said Gear.
Both statues were donated to the clinic. Gear said the facility has had surveillance cameras since the property suffered graffiti vandalism three years ago.
To those who committed this crime, Gear says the clinic "Certainly wouldn't press any charges. We'd just like our statue back. If the individuals that stole our lady, a wooden statue, about the same height, if it returns to its location, we would greatly appreciate that," said Gear.
