KFOR4.com is reporting that Colleen Hufford, an employee of Vaughan Foods in Moore was attacked by 30 year-old Alton Nolen around 4:00 p.m. on the afternoon of September 25. He stabbed her multiple times, then beheaded her.
Another employee, Traci Johnson, 43, was also attacked with the same knife, but survived her injuries and is presently in stable condition in a nearby hospital.
Nolen was brought down by Mark Vaughan, former CEO of the company and an Oklahoma County reserve deputy who shot him several times as he was attacking Johnson. Nolen survived and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Sergeant Jeremy Lewis of the Moore Police Department is calling Vaughan a hero for his quick intervention which saved the life of Johnson and possibly other employees at the plant.
“He’s a hero in this situation,” Sgt. Lewis told KFOR. “It could have gotten a lot worse.”
The FBI is now looking into Nolen’s background, particularly allegations that he was a recent convert to Islam who was actively trying to convert others.
“On behalf of everyone at Vaughan Foods, we are shocked and deeply saddened by the events of today," the company said in a statement issued yesterday.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the team member we lost and all those affected. Our focus is on the safety and well-being of our employees. We will provide counseling and support for our team members and support each other through this difficult time. We are working with authorities on this active investigation and ask that you direct your questions to local law enforcement.”
