The state of Georgia is facing an unprecedented legal situation in the case of a 23 year-old woman who took an abortion pill she purchased on the internet which resulted in the illegal abortion of a five-and-a-half-month-old baby boy.

WALB is reporting on the case of Kenlissa Jones who has been charged with malice murder and possession of a dangerous drug after taking an abortion pill that resulted in the birth of a baby boy inside her car as a friend was driving her to the hospital. The child survived for about half an hour.

Jones purchased a drug named Cytotec over the internet from a source in Canada

Georgia law does not allow abortions after 20 weeks unless it is performed in a licensed hospital, in a licensed ambulatory surgical center, or in a health facility licensed as an abortion facility by the Department of Community Health.

As a result, Jones has been charged with murder and was taken to the Dougherty County Jail where she is being held without bond. Jones has another son, just under two years of age, who was been placed in the care of her brother.

Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards told WALB that this is the first time he has seen this kind of situation and believes the case will likely go before a grand jury where Georgia and federal law can be explored.

Meanwhile, Jones' stunned family members are mourning the loss of the child and Jones’ incarceration.

" . . . (W)e didn't even know she was pregnant," said her brother Rico Riggins. "And so my first real reaction was like, why she keeping it away from us."

He added: "We lost what would have been a nephew for me. And everything. And then my sister."

According to a report, she purchased the drug, called Cytotec, from a source in Canada.

"Once she took those pills, from the way I'm understanding it, she was in a world of hurt for a while," Riggins said. "We're coping the best we can. We're hoping we get a lot of prayers. I don't want anyone to be mad or upset with my family. At the end of the day they are doing the best we can."

Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards said this case will likely go before a grand jury, because Georgia and federal laws will need to be explored.
