After receiving fertility treatments, a Tunisian woman is reportedly pregnant with 12 babies.
According to a report by London’s Sun, the woman, a teacher from Gafsa, Tunisia whose name is not being revealed, is expecting six boys and six girls.
The woman, who is said to be in good health, is subject to constant medical monitoring. Doctors say she claims to be feeling fine and is looking forward to hugging her six boys and six girls.
The children’s father, named in local news reports only as Marwan, said: "In the beginning, we thought that my wife would give birth to twins, but more fetuses were discovered. Our joy increased with the growing number."
The Tunisian health and social ministries have said they will offer various forms of assistance to the family.
British fertility experts confirmed that the extraordinary pregnancy was “possible” but that it carries “colossal” risks.
Dr Mark Hamilton, of the British Fertility Society, said: "Twelve babies seems extraordinary. The woman could have been receiving ovulation induction treatment, which stimulates egg production. You don't have the same control as with IVF."
In January, Nadya Suleman of California, US, delivered eight healthy babies conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF).
In May of this year, a 26 year old Irishwoman gave birth to sextuplets – four girls and two boys. However, one of the girls died last month.
