CNSNews.com is reporting that the First Lady made these remarks at a campaign event in Nebraska on Tuesday while boasting about her husband's accomplishments in office.
"Two years ago, we made history together by finally passing health reform," said Mrs. Obama. "And because we passed this law, insurance companies will now have to cover basic preventive care--things like prenatal care, mammograms, contraception--at no extra cost."
The controversial HHS mandate, which will force religious employers to offer insurance for medical services that violate their religious beliefs, goes into effect for most employers on August 1. Religious employers have been granted a one year extension in order to determine how they will go about obeying a law that mandates that nearly all health insurance plans in the United States must provide women with sterilizations and FDA-approved contraceptives (including those that can induce abortions) without any fees or co-pay.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and many Catholic leaders in the United States have voiced strong opposition to the mandate, calling it an "unprecedented attack" on religious liberty and want the administration to rescind it. Several Catholic and evangelical institutions have already sued the administration over the mandate, arguing that it violates their First Amendment right to the free exercise of religion.
As one Christian blogger opined: "In just terms of making history one could say Michelle Obama is right, but in terms of her gloating about it, one would find the reason for the history being made to be a dangerous precedent. Michelle Obama is rather proud that her husband and the Democrat Party made history in attacking religious liberty in this country."
He adds: "Maybe the Supreme Court will make history and rule ObamaCare to be a violation of the Constitution."
