Cardinal Dolan to Give Benediction at RNC Convention

In an interview with EWTN's Raymond Arroyo, set to air tonight, former Governor Mitt Romney will announce that Cardinal Timothy Dolan will give the benediction at the Republican National Convention on the night he accepts the presidential nomination.

According to the Associated Press (AP), Cardinal Dolan's spokesman, Joseph Zwilling, said the Cardinal told both the Republican and Democratic parties that he would accept any invitation to offer a prayer at their conventions.

"It's not an endorsement," Zwilling told the AP. "It's as a priest going to pray."

However, his appearance will be highly symbolic, especially because the Archdiocese of New York City is one of more than 40 Catholic groups that are suing the Obama administration over a mandate that would force employers to provide insurance for health care services that violate their religious beliefs. An overly narrow exemption applies only to houses of worship and not to religious employers such as hospitals, charities and colleges.

Governor Romney who supports repeal of the oppressive mandate has been campaigning against it in television ads as well on the stump. While speaking to EWTN's Raymond Arroyo, he promised to evaluate any legislation posed during his administration according to "its impact on religious freedom."

The interview can be seen on Arroyo's "The World Over Live" on EWTN tonight which airs at 8:00 p.m. EST.
