The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has launched a new website to mark the Year for Priests which will be celebrated from June 19, 2009 to June 19, 2010, throughout the world.
The new website includes Pope Benedict’s message for the Year for Priests as well as information about the plenary indulgence that is available in conjunction with the celebration. Vistors to the site will find prayers that have been commissioned for both priests and laity in downloadable format that can also be used by parishes and dioceses.
The Bishops plan to provide the site with monthly articles written by prominent Catholic women who will write about their faith and trust in the priesthood.
Pope Benedict will officially open the Year for Priests in the Vatican Basilica at 6 p.m. on Friday 19 June, Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which coincides with the 150th anniversary of the death of St. Jean Marie Vianney, “Cure of Ars,” who is is the patron saint of parish priests.
Activities for the Year for Priests include a gathering of priests in Rome for the culmination of the Year for Priests, as well as a retreat on the national level. Information on the retreat will be provided through the Web site.
