During a meeting with a member of the Senate Steering Committee, Supreme Court Justice nominee Sonia Sotomayor said she does not share the Catholic Church’s position on abortion and has never given much thought to whether or not the unborn have rights.
According to a report by OneNewsNow.com, the comments were made during a meeting with pro-life Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), who said he remained deeply concerned about Sotomayor’s commitment to the Constitutional rights of all Americans after meeting with her this week.
"When I asked if an unborn child has any rights whatsoever, I was surprised that she said she had never thought about it," he says. "This is not just a question about abortion, but about respect due to human life at all stages -- and I hope this is cleared up in her hearings."
He also said that Sotomayor, who refers to herself as Catholic, indicated she does not share the Church's commitment to protecting the unborn.
The Senator was also disturbed by her response to questions about the Second Amendment, which gives Americans the right to keep and bear arms.
"She was unwilling to say the Second Amendment protects a fundamental right that applies to all Americans, which raises serious questions about her view of the Bill of Rights," Sen. DeMint said.
Given Sotomayor's comments on gun rights and the unborn, Sen. DeMint left the meeting questioning whether Sotomayor has what he believes is required of a Supreme Court nominee -- an "unwavering commitment to the Constitution and equal justice for all Americans."
