A homosexual version of Mickey Mouse seems to be what the liberal pro-gay media are pining for as they put the pressure on Disney to include more same-sex couples in their movies or risk becoming "an anachronism".
Newsbusters is reporting that the ultra-liberal Salon.com published an article written by Renee Davidson questioning why there are no gay Disney characters.
"The animation giant has never featured an openly gay character in any of its multimillion dollar films or cartoons,” Davidson wrote, “let alone present a (genuine) same-sex kiss.”
She goes on to criticize how the plots of Disney films "overwhelmingly revolve around heterosexual romance. Heterosexual love — including, of course, the highly esteemed heterosexual kiss — is presented as 'exceptional, powerful, magical and transformative'.”
For examples, she uses the Beauty and the Beast kiss which transforms the whole world from winter to spring.
"In The Little Mermaid, the so-called 'kiss of true (heterosexual) love,' as deemed by Ursula, is so powerful that it is the only way Ariel can remain human," Davidson continues.
"When Nala and Simba kiss in The Lion King, the act is so pivotal that it empowers Simba to change his mind and decide to fight to save his kingdom. In each of these moments, Disney teaches us that heterosexual love, particularly as expressed through the prized heterosexual kiss, is fantastical, transformational and sublime: It can revive a person from death, awaken someone from a deep sleep, bring together cultures and create literal fireworks."
What Davidson doesn't consider is the fact that these fantastical images are all symbols of what heterosexuality is all about - bringing life into the world - something homosexuality is simply not capable of doing.
Instead, she bemoans the fact that Disney doesn't follow the lead of another child-oriented entertainment outlet, Archie Comics.
"In an issue to go on sale in August, Archie Comics will feature a kiss between two openly gay characters, Kevin and his boyfriend Devon. The gay kiss (because just like “gay marriage,” it can’t be just a “kiss,” right?) shows how much the 72-year-old Archie Comics company has evolved amid America’s cultural changes."
Those cultural changes aren't nearly as sweeping as Ms. Davidson contends, a fact not missed by the producers of four gay-themed sitcoms intended to celebrate the new acceptance of homosexuality - all of which were recently cancelled due to lack of viewership.
Davidson simply ignores - or perhaps is unaware of - these facts as she ominously warns Disney that unless they start featuring openly gay characters in their films, they risk becoming "an anachronism".
"Her attack on Disney’s heterosexuality wasn’t a surprise to find on Salon, of course, which is just keeping up it’s reputation for celebrating all things that push the gay agenda in gender portrayals.," writes Lauren Enk of Newsbusters.
"But then again, Disney has shown signs in the past of caving to whatever political agenda hits the mainstream, and gender-bending cartoons are already starting to surface elsewhere. If the pressure keeps mounting, perhaps a Princess Boy will be next in the line-up of Disney’s leading ladies."
