LifeSiteNews.com is reporting that members of the Girl Scouts of Northern California proudly published photos of the girls carrying a Girl Scouts banner marching in the parade on their Facebook page.
"The San Francisco Girl Scouts participate in many parades that celebrate the diversity of San Francisco," said Dana Allen, communications manager for the Girl Scouts of Northern California. "Girl Scouts is inclusive and reflects the communities we serve."
Some parents were pleased to allow their daughter to participate.
"I want them to be able to tell their children they were a part of this," said Del Gregor, 53, the mother an 11 year-old Girl Scout, to USA Today. "By the time they're grown up, their kids won't believe there was a time when gay people couldn't get married."
Not everyone thought this was the kind of history an organization such as the Girl Scouts should be making.
"GSUSA has promised they have 'established standards that do not permit the advocacy or promotion of a personal lifestyle or sexual orientation,'" said Sydney Volanski, 17, an ex Girl-Scout and founder of SpeakNowGirlScouts.com which documents the new and much more liberal bend of the scouts. "Yet here is undeniable participation in an advocacy campaign. Unfortunately, this is not their first broken promise."
The Scouts have been under increasing criticism for their liberal policies which many believe undermine the goal of the organization, to groom healthy and virtuous young women for tomorrow.
Sydney's mother, Christy Volanski, also felt their presence in the parade, which is notorious for its vulgar displays, is not the kind of activity Girl Scouts should be participating in. She told LifeSite that she was "really surprised" that the Scouts would endorse an event that "features vulgar male dancers dressed only in underwear, a lesbian statue of liberty (courtesy of the ACLU float), free condoms, and more."
"As a mom, I'm very concerned that the Girl Scouts feel this is an appropriate event for any age. And further, what does all of this have to do with scouting?" she said.
Allen dismissed her concerns, saying that parents were required to sign permission slips for their daughter's participation in the event.
When asked if the Girl Scouts supports gay marriage, Allen told LifeSite: "Because Girl Scouts is a very diverse organization, we also respect the many points of view on political and social issues."
