Planned Parenthood Profits Hit Record $1 Billion

(March 31, 2008) The newly released 2006-2007 annual report of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America reveals that the nation’s largest abortion provider has exceeded $1 billion dollars in profit for the first time in its history. Some of these profits are the result of an increase in the number of abortions it performed in 2006, as well as tax payer funding of over $336 million.
While touting itself as “the nations most trusted provider of sexual and reproductive health care,” the reports states that the number of abortions performed at Planned Parenthood clinics increased from 264,943 in 2005 to 289,650 in 2006.
In addition, the organization doubled its “excess of revenue over expenses” from $55.7 million in 2005 to $112 million in 2006.
The report also acknowledged the receipt of over $336 million in government grants and contracts from both state and federal governments. One-fourth of Planned Parenthood’s federal funding is channeled through Title X of the Public Health Service Act, which allows the government to grant money to private entities to aid in the operation of “family planning projects” although they can’t be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.
However, critics point out that this grant money frees up $336 million of Planned Parenthood’s money which can then be used for things like defending the right to abortion, supporting graphic sex education programs and hosting web sites that encourage teens to engage in a variety of sexual activities.
Even more serious is the fact that this money supports Planned Parenthood clinics across the country that have been caught disobeying state laws requiring health care workers to report the sexual abuse of minors.
These findings came to light after a 2002 undercover investigation by the pro-life group Life Dynamics. They found that Planned Parenthood (PP) clinics routinely counseled actors who were posing as young pregnant girls in need of abortions to conceal the ages of their adult sexual partners because state laws required them to report this as statutory rape.
Since then, a plethora of cases have been uncovered across the country. One of the more recent cases involved a 15 year old Connecticut teen who had been abducted and impregnated by a 41 year old man, then taken to a Planned Parenthood clinic for an abortion. The clinic did not report the crime.
Even more shocking is a recent case of a 14 year old Ohio girl who was brought to a Planned Parenthood clinic under pressure by the 21 year old man who had been abusing her. Not only did Planned Parenthood fail to question or report the man who paid for the abortion with his credit card, Planned Parenthood even administered a birth control shot to the young girl, which was paid for by the 21-year old male, and gave the girl a bag of condoms so that the man could continue having sex with her after the abortion. When the girl’s family decided to sue the clinic, Planned Parenthood counter-sued, claiming the girl committed fraud and tricked them by giving clinic workers the wrong phone number for her parents.
In another part of the country, a Kansas Planned Parenthood affiliate is currently facing 107 criminal charges after allegedly performing illegal late term abortions. The charges include the failure to report child abuse, to comply with parental consent requirements and to enforce the 24-hour waiting period.
In California, Planned Parenthood clinics are being sued after allegedly overcharging state and federal governments $180 million.
Another undercover investigation conducted by students at UCLA found staff workers at Planned Parenthood clinics in Idaho who were willing to accept donations from a racist donor who wanted the money used to abort black babies.
The list goes on and on, but even after all these legal troubles, Planned Parenthood clinics continue to cover up crimes. An investigation conducted last year by an 18 year-old University of California sophomore named Lila Rose found that clinic workers are still unwilling to report the sexual abuse of minors.
While posing as a pregnant 15-year-old accompanied by her 23-year-old “boyfriend” played by James O'Keefe, Rose recorded a meeting with a Planned Parenthood staffer who knew she was required by law to report sexual abuse, including statutory rape when the victim is under 16 years of age.
However, in the meeting between Rose and an anonymous staffer, Rose was told: “If you're 15, we have to report it ... If you're not, if you're older than that, then we don't need to.”
Rose says: “Okay, but if I just say I'm not 15, then it's different?”
The staffer responded: “You could say 16 ... Just figure out a birth date that works. And I don't know anything.”
This kind of activity, coupled with the company’s billion-dollar profits is why leaders such as Tony Perkins, the head of the Family Research Council, think funding Planned Parenthood is a bad investment of taxpayer money.
“Would you invest in a company whose affiliates are complicit in sexual crimes against children?” he said to LifeNews.
“Would you take your hard-earned money and pile it into a company whose fund raisers ‘get excited’ when someone wishes to target African-American babies for extinction?”
But the ultimate slap in the face, he says, is that Planned Parenthood still receives government funds despite the fact that it’s political action committee will spend $10 million in this year's election on pro-abortion candidates.
Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind) is planning to propose an amendment to the appropriations bill that fund the Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services to prohibit federal funding for Planned Parenthood. He plans to bring his amendment to the floor when the House considers the bill this summer.
