Under a hail of criticism, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts has corrected its announcement about celebrating “freedom of choice” on Inauguration Day with a free doughtnut of "choice." The company realized the inappropriateness of its phrasing and reissued the announcement with the offending language removed.
In last week’s announcement , the company claimed to be “honoring America's freedom of choice on Inauguration Day by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer . . .” This statement has been changed to the much more innocuous “Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is offering a free doughnut of a customer’s choice at participating Krispy Kreme locations . . . . No purchase necessary.”
The company’s revised statement also makes it clear that “The Inauguration Day promotion is not about any social or political issue.”
The move to correct the statement was well-received by pro-life groups. "We are grateful to Krispy Kreme executives who realized the inappropriate use of the phrase ‘freedom of choice’ and have changed their announcement, available on their web site,” said Judie Brown, founder of American Life League (ALL), who broke the story last week.
“The use of the phrase ‘freedom of choice’ by any corporation, particularly when used to coincide with President-elect Obama's inauguration, is offensive and demeaning to the millions who have suffered either directly or indirectly through abortion.”
