The owner of Bridges TV, a station launched to help portray Muslims in a more positive light, has been charged with second-degree murder in the beheading death of his estranged wife.
According to The Buffalo News, the incident occurred in Orchard Park, New York on Feb. 12 at Bridges TV where Muzzammil Hassan, 44, apparently beheaded his wife Aasiya, 37, and left her body for police to find.
Aasiya had recently filed for divorce and had taken out an order of protection against her husband less than a week before the murder.
Muzzammil, an influential member of the local Muslim community, turned himself into police shortly after the killing.
"He came to the police station at 6:20 p.m. [Thursday] and told us that she was dead," said Orchard Park Police Chief Andrew Benz.
He told police that his wife could be found at his place of business and it was here that officers discovered the decapitated body. It is believed the killing occurred sometime late Thursday afternoon. Officers are still looking for the murder weapon.
"Obviously, this is the worst form of domestic violence possible," said Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III.
A statement by Bridges TV expressed shock and sorrow over the killing. “Bridges TV is deeply shocked and saddened by the murder of Aasiya [Zubair] Hassan and subsequent arrest of Muzzammil Hassan. Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to the families of the victim. We request that their right to privacy be respected.”
Muzzammil Hassan was arraigned before Village Justice Deborah Chimes and sent to the Erie County Holding Center.
