Another Pro-Abortion Catholic May Head U.S. Health Department

Another pro-abortion Catholic politician with ties to one of the nation’s most notorious late-term abortionists is said to be President Obama’s top choice to head the Health and Human Services (HHS) Department after another pro-abortion Catholic politician withdrew from consideration due to tax problems.
Kansas Governor Kathleen Subelius is rumored to be a serious contender for the post, replacing former Sen.Tom Daschle who withdrew his nomination earlier this month.
Governor Sebelius is an outspoken friend of the abortion industry. As governor she twice vetoed abortion clinic regulation legislation as well as a bill seeking to curb late-term abortions. She is a close ally of the state’s abortionists, including the notorious George Tiller, a late-term abortionist nicknamed “Tiller the Killer” for his brutal abortion history. Subelius once threw a party for Tiller in the Governor’s mansion to thank him for his support during her campaign.
While a state representative, she fought continually against parental notification, abortion waiting periods, and informed consent.
“Almost all of those working in the Obama administration are pro-abortion,” said Catholic League president Bill Donohue, “and the expectation is that almost all future appointees will be champions of abortion rights, as well. Fortunately, most are not in a position to affect abortion policy. One glaring exception is the secretary of health and human services. Unfortunately, Gov. Sebelius, a Catholic, may get the job.”
Calling Subelius’ support for abortion “off the charts,” Donohue points out that she has been publicly criticized by the last three archbishops of Kansas City.
In 1992, while serving as a state legislator, Archbishop Ignatius Strecker chastised her for leading what he called a “death march of the unborn.”
When she become governor in 2003, Archbishop James Keleher, citing her abortion record, asked her to move her inauguration interfaith service from Topeka’s Assumption Catholic Church. She refused.
The current archbishop, Joseph Naumann, challenged her to name one instance in her long legislative career where she supported limiting abortion rights. She could not. He subsequently asked her not to go to Communion.
“None of these archbishops overreacted. Not only does Sebelius support the now outlawed practice of killing babies who are 80 percent born, so-called partial-birth abortion, she has accepted donations from one of the most notorious practitioners of this Nazi-style act—Dr. George Tiller.”
After the pope’s recent admonishment of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, “now we have the specter of another pro-abortion Catholic stiffing the Catholic Church,” Donohue said.
“This is setting up a confrontation that pro-life Catholics will not walk away from. It is also setting up a battle between those Catholics who are honestly pro-life, and those who feign a pro-life position while always embracing the likes of Sebelius.”
