Pro-Life Congressman Finally Hears from White House

By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Writer At long last, the White House finally contacted a prominent pro-life Democrat who has been trying to speak with the president about stripping abortion funding from health care reform. According to a report by LifeNews, Rep. Bart Stupack (D-MI), who has been trying for months to get a meeting with the White House and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to discuss the issue of abortion in health care reform, finally got the call he was waiting for. Rep. Stupak told the New York Times that after waiting weeks for a call back from the president, he was told by the White House to “get this thing worked out among the Democrats. We want you to work it out within the party.” Even though the president did not promise to support an amendment banning all abortion coverage from health care reform, "We got his attention, which we never had before," Rep. Stupak said. The call from the White House prompted Speak Pelosi to give Stupak a chance to make his case. According to the Times, the Speaker’s spokesman, Nadeam Elshami, said in a statement, “As we have throughout the process, we are meeting with our members to listen to their concerns, consulting with the administration, and making progress.” While everyone seems at least willing to talk, Rep. Stupak remains pessimistic about the possibility of congressional leaders allowing any action that might see abortion coverage removed from the current slate of health care bills. However, Rep. Stupak has repeatedly said he has enough pro-life Democrats to defeat any health care bill that comes to the House floor that includes abortion funding.  © All Rights Reserved, Living His Life Abundantly®/Women of Grace®  http://www.womenofgrace.com
