SFGate.com is reporting that Freemont Unified School District Superintendent Jim Morris issued a statement late Friday afternoon in which he recommended that the textbook, Your Health Today, be withdrawn until the concerns of outraged parents are addressed.
Morris was responding to a petition from more than 1,000 people asking the district to withdraw the 392-page book which was intended for ninth grade health classes.
"Administration and staff believes the textbook will be an asset to our health curriculum in that it provides the current, accurate, factual and relevant information our students need to make responsible decisions about their health," Morris said in a statement.
"I also recognize and respect the concerns of some of our families and believe this recommendation is a great compromise that will address those opinions while still working toward ultimately providing the best curriculum possible in our schools," he said.
In the meantime, the district plans to return to the book in use before the adoption of the new text.
