The Journal Sentinel is reporting on the case of Fond du Lac local Jim Guell, 73, who said he became fed up with the offensive billboards and decided he had to do something about it.
Guell, a retired insurance broker and member of the Knights of Columbus, lives directly across from Highway 41.
"I got tired of seeing those advertisements, those boards, every time I came home," Guell said. "I look out the window of my home and they're lit at night and I thought, I've got to combat this some way."
He felt especially compelled to do something after having a problem with pornography as a younger man. “ . . . I know what kind of damage can be done and how much of an addiction it can turn out to be,” he said.
Thanks to a generous donation from the Knights, and design assistance from Morality in Media, a national anti-pornography group, Guell is now giving motorists another point of view to ponder as they drive by: “Porn destroys love. What would Jesus say about pornography?”
He’s hoping his ad will make people realize that these shops contribute to the proliferation of porn which he calls “the greatest blight there is on society.”
Surprisingly, the owner of the billboard space, Ronald Boda, was inspired by Guell’s spunk and decided to post a billboard of his own that reads: “Got God?”
Boda told the Sentinel that his billboard has nothing to do with the signs advertising the sex shops.
“I felt obligated. God’s been good to me. It’s hard taking a solid religious stand when you believe in the freedom of speech,” he told the outlet. “It’s been a conflicting issue for me this whole time, but what do you do? What do you do?”
Exactly what he did – fight back!
