Couple Arrested for Hiding Aborted Baby Under Christmas Tree
In a shocking display of the growing desensitization to the sanctity of life in our culture, a south Texas couple has been charged with hiding the corpse of a seven-month old fetus in a Christmas gift because they were unable to flush it down the toilet.
Fox News is reporting that Ruby Lee Medina, 31, and Javier Gonzalez, 37, of Mission, Texas, have been charged with abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence after police found a fetus in the woman’s trailer home after receiving an anonymous tip.
San Juan Police Chief Juan Gonzalez said they believe the woman was in her seventh month of pregnancy when she managed to obtain pills to induce an abortion, even though this medication is illegal for use at such a late stage of pregnancy. Police believe Medina took the medication sometime last Thursday morning, then called an ambulance when she started bleeding. She later told doctors that she didn’t know where the fetus was.
“Herself and her companion, Javier Gonzalez, attempted to discard or harm the fetus by flushing it down the toilet,” Chief Gonzalez told the Express News of San Antonio. However, when that didn’t work, they attempted to bury the fetus in the backyard, eventually deciding to wrap it up in a gift box and place it under the tree, perhaps until they could come up with a better idea of what to do with it.
The couple has been charged with abuse of a corpse and evidence tampering and are facing a maximum sentence of up to 10 years. They were released on $20,000 bond on Monday.
Police say they are also investigating reports that medication used to induce abortion is being sold illegally in the Rio Grande Valley. “We do feel there could be some illegal drug activity going on with prescription pills that deal with pregnancy,” Gonzalez said.
They are also investigating why the hospital did not report the missing baby.
Autopsy results on the baby are pending.
