WTAE is reporting that at least five students at a Westmoreland County middle school were given the puzzles which contained explicit sexual terms.
The puzzle was discovered by James Carter, whose son and other students in his eighth grade class were given the puzzle.
"I asked my son who passed it out, and he said the teacher passed it out," Carter told Pittsburgh's Action News 4. "I don't think this is what they should be doing in the 8th grade level."
Carter said he went to the school Tuesday afternoon to inquire about the puzzles but administrators refused to answer his questions when he informed them that he would be recording their answers.
Word of the puzzles became public when angry parents attended a school board meeting last night to demand answers. Board members claimed that they had only just heard of the incident and promised to investigate.
Another board member, Roberta Bergstedt, who was not present at the meeting, later emailed the press to say that the puzzles were passed out by mistake.
Thus far, the school district is not commenting on whether or not any teachers or staff will be disciplined over the incident.
