Kara Tippetts Goes Home to God

k tippettsThe courageous young blogger who was dying of stage four breast cancer and who tried so hard to persuade euthanasia advocate Brittany Maynard to die naturally, has gone home to God.

Kara Tippetts, 38, the Colorado Springs wife and mother who inspired the world with her blog about the dying process, passed away at her home on March 22. She is survived by her husband Jason and her children Eleanor Grace, Harper Joy, Lake Edward, and Story Jane.

Kara's blog, known as Mundane Faithfulness, started out as a blog about motherhood but became a gripping chronicle of her battle with stage four breast cancer after her diagnosis two years ago. Her writings came to the attention of the mainstream media in the midst of the debate raging over the decision of 29 year-old Brittany Maynard to end her own life rather than live with the diagnosis of inoperable brain cancer.

“In your choosing your own death, you are robbing those that love you with such tenderness, the opportunity of meeting you in your last moments and extending you love in your last breaths,” Kara wrote to Maynard in an open letter.

Kara quickly became the voice of those who oppose physician assisted suicide and believe in accepting the natural death God has willed for each person.

In a powerful new documentary about her life, she looks into the camera, her once sparkling blue eyes now tired and filled with tears, she tells the viewers that she feels like the kid who went to a great party only to have their father show up to take her home too early.

“I’m not afraid to die,” she says with tears running down her face, “I just don’t want to go.”

But it was God’s will for her, and so she accepted it, and therein found her peace.

“The world says I should be angry, that I should be shaking my fist at God but I wanted to share my story that suffering isn’t a mistake, and it isn’t the absent of God’s goodness because He’s present in pain,” she says in the documentary.

Kara was determined to live every day of her life to the fullest, which she did even after being placed into hospice care in December.

“I know I’ve got cancer. I know I’m going to die of it. But I also know I have today and in this today I get to live well.”

Toward the end of her earthly life, she wrote:

“My little body has grown tired of battle, and treatment is no longer helping. But what I see, what I know, what I have is Jesus. He has still given me breath, and with it I pray I would live well and fade well.”

And she did, passing away peacefully in the arms of her loved ones.

Because of her courageous sharing, Kara will live on in the story she left behind, a story that will resonate forever in the hearts of anyone who needs to know that even in their darkest moments, they will never walk alone.

May she rest in peace.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to a special fund that will benefit the Tippetts children. Donations can be sent to Jason Tippetts, PO Box 49727, Colorado Springs, CO 80949.
