Petition Underway to Stop Blasphemous Art Exhibit

Milwaukee Art Museum Milwaukee Art Museum

A petition has been started to prevent a blasphemous portrait of Pope Benedict from being displayed at the Milwauke Museum in November.

UCatholic.com is hosting a petition for all Catholics who want to express their disappointment with the Milwaukee Museum for choosing to display a portrait of Pope Benedict XVI which is made out of 17,000 condoms. The portrait, which was gifted to the museum by a gay activist, is supposedly meant to generate discussion about AIDS; however, it has sparked a larger debate about the duplicitous form of “tolerance” that exists in a culture that insists upon accepting everyone’s point-of-view – except that of Christians.

The petition also faults the museum for suggesting that it is only the Catholic Church whose stance against condoms is contributing to the spread of AIDS. Science has also arrived at the same conclusion with Harvard’s Dr. Edward Green finding that increased condom use is associated with higher HIV-infection rates. This is believed to be the result of people having a false sense of security about the protection of condoms who are then more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviors.

The museum has come under fire from Catholics around the country and is on the brink of losing valuable patrons who are threatening to withdraw their support if the institution goes ahead with its plans to display the piece later this year.
