Pro-Abortion Video Disgusts Both Sides

NARAL Pro-Choice America has outraged both sides of the abortion debate by releasing a callous and very unfunny internet video that parodies a popular Jerry Seinfeld show entitled, “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” by featuring a woman trying to get an abortion.

FoxNews.com is reporting on the video which stars Alice Wetterlund, a cast member of HBO’s “Silicon Valley,” and standup comic Nato Green. Cameras follow the pair around as Wetterlund looks for a place to get an abortion but are met with “barriers the anti-choice movement creates,” according to the video’s YouTube description.

At the beginning of the video, Wetterlund is asked why she wants an abortion.

“I want an abortion because my body is doing a thing right now, that is not incubating a person, and I would like it to continue doing that thing,” she says. “It’s my choice. Okay?”

The pair then spot a child who appears to be slapping his father in the face, to which they both agreed, “We don’t need any more of this in the world.”

Their next stop is a clinic that appears to be closed. This is followed by a stop at a crisis pregnancy center which they mistake for a clinic. Inside is a ridiculously implausible caricature of a Christian woman who tries to talk Wetterlund out of the abortion by showing her a figurine of her baby and asking “Who needs doctors when you have the Book of Jeremiah?”

As the pair are leaving the center, the woman shouts, “Did you know that if you get an abortion there’s an 18 percent chance that the chance of you getting into heaven is zero percent?”

The next stop is a clinic that supposedly offers abortions, but a nurse confronts Wetterlund with a list of “teensy weensy requirements imposed on us by the state” that make it impossible for her to actually get an abortion.

For instance, she’s told that she has to leave and come back exactly 32 hours later.

“We’re also required to let you know that abortion may increase your chance of breast cancer,” the nurse says, then looks down and mutters, “even though it’s not true.”

Wetterlund is told that the easiest way to get an abortion is to go to a place where it’s legal, like Canada or by sailing into international waters.

The video ends with a statement from NARAL saying “It shouldn’t be this hard to get an abortion.”

The situations in the video are so preposterous that even abortion supporters were angered by it.

One commenter on the YouTube site wrote: “This was pretty awful in every way imaginable -- a deeply serious topic no matter which side of it one is on, reduced to several unfunny punchlines. I can only guess that NARAL was going for the boring-poem-about-bored effect, but they end up undermining their own argument. Repugnant and loopy.”

Another wrote: “They definitely hammered a message home, but I don't think it was the one they intended. They aimed for the gutter and landed in the sewer. Vile.”

Twitter was also ablaze with criticism. “I am pro-choice. This is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen,” wrote @bayo0786.

@KC_Rounder tweeted: “I’m called a concern troll since I’m pro-choice, but often not pro-choice-organizations. This is how I got there.”

Pro-life viewers were equally repulsed.

“This video is an offense to all women: those who have had an abortion and experienced deep pain and suffering after that choice, those who are conflicted on the issue, and even NARAL’s own constituents who they portray as angry and flippant,” said Mallory Quigley, communications director for the Susan B. Anthony List, to Fox News.

Dr. Grazie Pozo, a policy advisor for The Catholic Association, had a completely different take.

“This may be the best pro-life ad ever made,” said Dr. Pozo said. “NARAL's video shows how radically their ideological commitment to abortion divides them from the rest of Americans. It shows perfectly the dark and joyless worldview that NARAL proposes we all ought to share, as well as their utter contempt for goodhearted people who disagree with them.”
