The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, commended the newly elected president Donald Trump and prayed that he would be guided by God to serve his country and promote peace in the world.
Vatican Radio is reporting on the Cardinal's comments which were made while talking to journalists yesterday during a conference at Rome’s Lateran University. The Cardinal said he respected the will of the American people as expressed in Tuesday’s election.
“We send our congratulations to the new president”, he continued, in the hope that “his government may bear real fruit.”
He declined to comment on specific issues, such as immigration, a subject with which the Vatican has been at odds with the president-elect, noting that policies often change after a person wins election.
Parolin went on to say that Trump can be “assured of our prayers that the Lord may enlighten and support him” in the service of his country, but also in the service of peace and well-being in the world.
He concluded by saying that he believes everyone must work together to change the situation in the world today, which is one of “grave wounds, of serious conflicts.”
