Vatican Radio is reporting on an address given by the pope last week at a Vatican conference entitled, “Narcotics: Problems and Solutions of this Global Issue,” which was hosted by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

During the address, Pope Francis said that people who fall into the snares of drugs are victims who have “lost their freedom” in return for a “new form of slavery” this is why he believes drug addicts should get help from their families and even the government in order to get a proper ARC rehab portsmouth treatment.

However, he said, “every addicted person brings with them a distinct personal history, which should be listened to, understood, loved, and, where possible, cured and purified. We cannot fall into the injustice of classifying them as if they were objects or broken junk; rather, every person should be valued and appreciated in their dignity in order to be cured. They continue to have, more than ever, dignity as persons and children of God.”

It is estimated that between 26.4 million and 36 million people worldwide currently abuse opioids. In the U.S., 2.1 million are dependent upon prescription opioid pain relievers and nearly half a million are addicted to heroin. As a result of these increasingly high numbers, more than 47,000 people died from drug overdoses in 2014, a rise of 14 percent in just one year.

The pope called the supply of illegal drugs an “important part of organized crime” that must be rooted out and destroyed, and said the demand for narcotics must also be addressed through education, social programs and family support.

“Integral human formation is the priority,” the pope said. “It gives people the possibility to possess the instruments of discernment, with which they are able to discern various options and help others. This formation is principally oriented to the most vulnerable of a society, such as children and young people, but which is also usefully extended to families and those who suffer any type of marginalization.”
