By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Journalist Police in Silver Springs, Maryland shot and killed a man who stormed into the headquarters of the Discovery Channel brandishing a gun and bombs and demanding that the channel do more to discourage overpopulation and the "human filth" of new children. The incident happened yesterday afternoon at around 1:00 p.m. when 43 year old James J. Lee entered the Discovery Channel headquarters in suburban Washington, DC and took several people hostage in the lobby area. The building was immediately locked down with its 1,900 employees either fleeing the scene or taking cover in their offices. The 100 children at an employee day care center were evacuated to a nearby McDonald's. Police negotiated with the gunman for four hours, attempting to find a peaceful solution. However a sound like a gunshot and the sight of Lee appearing to threaten one of the hostages at about 4:50 p.m. caused SWAT team officers to storm the building. The suspect was shot and killed, at which time one of the bombs strapped to his body detonated. None of the hostages were hurt in the incident. Police did not have to search for a motive for the crime. Lee, a San Diego resident, had been regularly protesting in front of the Discovery Channel headquarters ever since he experienced an "awakening" after watching former Vice President Al Gore's documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth". He was arrested and sentenced to six months of probation for disorderly conduct in front of the same building in March 2008. In addition, Lee left a long and rambling list of demands on the savetheplanetprotest.com website in which he asks for more programming from the Discovery Channel that focuses on "how people can live WITHOUT giving birth to more filthy human children since those new additions continue pollution and are pollution." He goes on to day that all programs on Discovery Health and The Learning Channel "must stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions. In those programs' places, programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility must be pushed. All former pro-birth programs must now push in the direction of stopping human birth, not encouraging it." Lee asserts his belief that saving the planet "means saving what's left of the non-human Wildlife. That means stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies! ... It is the responsiblity of everyone to preserve the planet they live on by not breeding any more children who will continue their filthy practices." He also asks that Darwin's theory of evolution and the Malthusian theory of overpopulation be reiterated "until it sinks into the stupid people's brains until they get it." Humans are "the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what's left of the planet with their false morals and breeding culture," he says. He ends the page-long diatribe by ordering the channel to adopt a new worldview. "Saving the environment and the remaining species diversity of the planet is now your mindset. Nothing is more important than saving them. The Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels."
